Nokia Networks is aiming to cut 550 jobs at R&D sites in the U.K., U.S., Sweden and Finland as part of its plan to improve efficiency.
The infrastructure arm of Nokia plans to reduce the number of R&D sites and centralize work into larger entities within the organization to increase efficiency and reduce costs. Some employees are expected to relocate.
The number of employees at the U.K. R&D site will be reduced because of a fall in demand for hardware R&D work. A material purchasing and planning unit in the U.K. will also be under review as the work is intended to be transferred to larger sites.
The basestation R&D site in Kista, Sweden, and the site in Santa Rosa, Calif., will be closed.
Work done at the Santa Rosa site will be transferred to the Espoo, Finland, site where broadband access activities will be centralized.
The company intends to increase the broadband access headcount in Finland, transfer some positions to its Mountain View, Calif., site, and will continue to increase partnering in broadband R&D and testing. Some R&D programs will also be discontinued.
