Rambus Inc. disclosed its new Redwood high-speed logic bus interface. It claims data rates of up to 6.4GHz or 10 times faster than the current highest speed 667MHz processor front side buses, the company reported.
Rambus said Redwood is a core that processor and interface IC makers will integrate into their chips. It provides a very fast chip-to-chip parallel bus in a variety of applications.
In consumer electronic applications Redwood can link high definition television decoder modems to processors in the HDTV set.
Redwood achieves its very high speed by using adjusting the data flow from the bus so that it arrives at each chip pin at the same time, the company said.
"This allows motherboard companies to make less costly boards, and the shorter PCB traces consume less power. Also Redwood needs only a four-layer board, compared to up to eight layers for conventional interface boards," the company noted.
