IBM said that it is making the 440GX PowerPC architecture available for licensing. IBM will work with its design providers, Cadence Design Systems Inc. and Synopsys Inc., to supply hard and soft versions designs as well as application support for the 32-bit RISC processor beginning this year.
Supporting the hardward version, Cadence is mapping the processor to foundry technologies so that it will be available for manufacture at IBM and third-party fabrication facilities.
Synopsys, meanwhile, is working with IBM on a synthesizable version of the 440 and on a design methodology based on its tools.
Both Cadence and Synopsys said they will provide design support for companies that have licensed the PowerPC through IBM.
