Intel said that it plans to spend $2 billion to upgrade one of its manufacturing plants in Arizona with newer technologies.
During the annual developer conference in San Jose, Intel Chief Executive Craig Barrett told reporters at a briefing that the plant upgrade will not lead to any changes in its current capital spending budget of $3.5 billion to $3.9 billion this year.
Intel said it plans to replace the current 200-millimeter technology in Fab 12 in Chandler, Ariz., with more efficient 300-millimeter equipment.
Fab 12 makes microprocessors, chip sets, communications chips and embedded chips using 0.13 micron technology. After the upgrade, the plant will make chips with 0.065 micron technology.
The company said the adding manufacturing capability is to support the current demand and to prepare for the sudden surge in demand although it has trimmed down its capital spending from $4.7 billion last year.
