Sun Microsystems on Monday confirmed reports that its upcoming blade server in the x86 architecture will use an Advanced Micro Devices Inc. Athlon XP-M mobile processor chip.
AMD has not yet unveiled the Athlon XP-M, although the firm's roadmap shows the chip debuting in the first half of this year.
Sun two weeks ago introduced a family of blade servers using its own SPARC and MIPS embedded processors in various versions. At the time, Sun said its blade lineup would also include a x86 version, but it declined to identify the supplier. Now the firm said the x86 blade will use a 1.2GHz Athlon XP-M.
It marks a big design win for Intel Corp's main rival. A Sun spokeswoman said the AMD chip was selected on the basis of technical considerations.
Sun also sources an Intel Pentium III processor for a separate LX50 general purpose server. The spokeswoman said the firm "enjoys good relations with both AMD and Intel."
