Intel Corp. continued to be the leading global flash memory supplier in 2002, but Samsung Electronics Co. proved the fastest-growing, according to IC Insights Inc., Scottsdale, Ariz.
Intel had flash sales of $2.1 billion and a 27% market share. Bill McClean, president of the chip market research firm, said flash memory accounted for about 9% of Intel's total IC revenue last year.
Catapulting to second position was Samsung with $1.1 billion in flash sales and a 14% market share. Samsung in 2001 was in ninth place with $300 million in flash revenue. McClean said Samsung's flash sales jumped 267% in 2002, predominately from its NAND-based devices.
Other ranking flash suppliers included Toshiba Corp. with $858 million revenue in third spot and an 11% market share, and Advanced Micro Devices with $795 million sales in fourth place and a 10% market share.
Fujitsu with $670 million in sales held the fifth post with a 9% share and STMicroelectronics with $609 million in sales was in sixth place with an 8% market sahre. IC Insights said Mitsubishi with $405 million in flash sales was in seventh position with 5% share.
The report forecast the global flash memory market to grow 36% this year to $10.6 billion from $7.8 billion in 2002. Flash unit shipments are estimated to rise 21% to 1.8 billion units this year. The flash average selling price (ASP) is predicted to jump 12% this year to $4.81.
