Infineon denies rumor on reconciliation

Friday, February 28, 2003
Infineon Technologies AG on Thursday denied that it was considering a reconciliation with Mosel Vitelic of Taiwan in the rupture of the two firms over their ProMOS joint DRAM venture.

Earlier this week, Infineon president Ulrich Schumacher and Mosel Vitelic Chairman Hung-chiu Hu held what they characterized as a "friendly and open exchange of opinions" over the ProMOS dispute.

Reports from Taiwan portrayed a meeting as an attempt to bring the parties back together again in ProMos.

However, an Infineon spokesman today told the press in Munich that "nothing has changed" in the firm's intention to sell all of its ProMOS stock and to quit the joint venture. He reiterated that the German firm is continuing to dispose of its entire 28% stake in ProMOS.

In a televised interview, Schumacher said that, "We only exchanged our ideas, and did not come to any conclusions. Resolution isn't the meaning of the meeting."

ProMos board member Albert Lin said that while no timetable has been set for reaching an agreement or working out any details, "both sides are inclined to work out problems in a peaceful and rational way."

The Infineon spokesman also said his company has no intention of backing away from its previous cancellation of its technology license with ProMOS for manufacturing and marketing of DRAMs made by the joint venture. The termination of the license agreement is currently in litigation in Taiwan courts.

He said the meeting of the two chief executives was arranged by the National Federation of Industry and Commerce in Taiwan. Schumacher was already in Taiwan meeting with government officials and with new DRAM partners, Winbond Electronics and Nanya Technology Corp. The Taiwan industry used the occasion to bring the two sparring parties together.

Although Infineon is pursuing its divorce from ProMOS, the spokesman said, "We are looking at the best solution without harming ProMOS."
