IBM launched Fab consulting servicee

Thursday, March 6, 2003 IBM has unveiled an engineering services business for Europe, the Middle East and Africa intended to sell contract design and other services based on the company's chip design and manufacturing expertise.

This expertise has already been extended to teaching customers how to build entire wafer fabs, IBM said, although it did not cite examples.

The business unit, IBM Engineering & Technology Services, intends to pitch itself to aerospace, automotive, communications, consumer, defense, information technology, and medical companies. The move offers access to IBM intellectual property, including designs ranging from complex chips to entire systems, the company said.

The so-called 'Practice and Delivery' part of the organization is based in Mainz, Germany and staffed with 100 scientists, design engineers and executives with manufacturing technology skills. Creation of the unit brings the total number of E&TS engineers worldwide to approximately 800, with a goal of increasing that number to as many as 1,000 later this year.

Dieter Muenk was named general manager for IBM Engineering & Technology Services for EMEA. Robert Blackburn and Farid Metwaly have been appointed vice president, business solutions, located in Somers, N.Y. and Dubai, United Arab Emirates respectively.

“Throughout EMEA, we will take a skills-on-demand approach to bringing customers top-tier engineers who are highly experienced in wrapping the appropriate intellectual property into a unique solution, one that can create an entirely new revenue stream for the client. We will also act as a portal into other parts of IBM, such as financing, research and development and consultants, together helping clients innovate new projects and accelerate their time-to-market," said Muenk.

"Our engineers have literally helped more than one client design an entire semiconductor factory,” said Muenk.
