Declining prices and increasing demand have positioned the flat-panel monitors to surpass traditional tube monitors in revenue this year, said a research firm.
Worldwide sales for flat panel in 2003 is expected to be around $20.4 billion while revenue from traditional monitors will come to $12.3 billion, said the firm. Last year, both segments accounted for about $15 billion in revenue.
Shipments of flat-panel monitors have been approximately doubling every year since 2000, leading to shortages in early 2002. Toward the middle of that year, however, supplies began to creep up and prices began to drop again.
