SanDisk is adding more capacity to its CompactFlash cards and introducing a smaller versions of the Secure Digital card format.
The SD Card Association has been working on a card that's about half the size of current SD cards. At CeBit conference in Hannover, Germany, this week, the industry group formally announced the format, called miniSD.
SanDisk said it would have 16MB cards available to customers in the next 30 days. In the second quarter, SanDisk will begin shipping 32MB and 64MB cards, with 128MB and 256MB versions due in the second half of the year.
Flash card formats are getting smaller in size and bigger in capacity over time in to fit the need for smaller cell phones with more applications.
Earlier on, Olympus and Fuji Photo Films nnounced xD-Picture Card, a smaller version of
the SmartMedia format whereas Hitachi released a smaller and compact Reduced Size MultiMediaCard card (RS-MMC).
SanDisk's also announced the new 4GB Type I CompactFlash card. Consumers will be able to store more than 1,000 digital songs or a full length DVD movie. The card is selling for $999.99, SanDisk said.
