Infineon annonce DDR2 chip samples

Tuesday, March 18, 2003
Infineon Technologies AG on Monday said it is shipping its first samples of a 512Mbit DDR2 SDRAM for use in servers, workstations and high-end PCs and notebooks.

Infineon's DDR2 memory will be available in speeds of 400Mbit/s, 533Mbit/s and 633Mbit/s. The chips are made with Infineon's 0.11-micron process technology, and come in x4, x8 and x16 configurations.

Officials said the first end-user systems with the firm's DDR2 memory are expected to appear in 2004.

Infineon also started shipping samples of 1Gbyte DDR SO-DIMMs for high-end PC notebooks. The module uses eight 1-Gbit stacked 512-Mbit die in a single package. The engineering sample price is $900.

The German chipmaker also added a 512Mbit Mobile-RAM chip targeted at PDAs, smart phones, Web pads and digital cameras. The new density chip joins the firm's Mobile-RAM line which also includes 128Mbit and 256Mbit components.
