UMC has formed a strategic partnership with Silicon7 Inc, a fabless designer of DRAMs to develop memory for mobile communications.
“Silicon7 shows tremendous potential to become a major force in the pseudo-SRAM and multi-chip package markets, particularly as it has a production proven line of innovative low-cost, low-power memory solutions,” said Hsuan in a statement.
UMC said that it has been cooperating with Silicon7 for many years on the development and manufacturing of memory products that target the mobile communications market space. Silicon7's CompactCell SRAM products are in volume production at UMC.
It was not disclosed whether UMC already has an equity position in Silicon7, or whether UMC expanded that equity position.
“With UMC's full financial, production and technical support, Silicon7 will become a virtual IDM and will be able to achieve the economies of scale to become the number one or two worldwide supplier of pseudo SRAM and low power DRAM to the technically demanding mobile handset market,” said Woodward Yang, chief executive officer of Silicon7.
“This strategic partnership will allow us to forge long-term business relationships with major handset manufacturers," Yang added.
