Broadcom Corp. announced that it has won a deal from HP/Compaq to sell its 54g 802.11g wireless LAN chipset as an upgrade option for the Presario 2100 and 2500 model notebook PCs.
Early last month, Dell Computer also adopted the same Wi-Fi product from Boardcom on its notebook PCs.
Broadcom's 802.11g is a pre-IEEE standard version, but is expected to be compatible when the industry group approves the final standard in June. The 802.11g is backward compatible with 802.11b because both operate at 2.4GHz frequency, but the newer 802.11g has 5 times the transmission rate at 54Mbits/s.
