iSuppli said global memory sales would see a 15% increase in 2003 compared to 6.2% growth in 2002.
The growth in 2002 was mainly in the DRAM sector, which increased by 32.2% in 2002.
Flash was the only other category that achieved positive growth. Overall growth of the flash market in 2002 was 0.8%, and this year iSuppli is projecting growth of 10.8% for the market.
While overall sales for NOR flash declined by 18.2% in 2002, NAND flash sales grew by 154% in the same period. Due to the potential growth, NOR flash makers like STMicroelectronics (ST) and Hynix Semiconductor have decided to get into the NAND market. DRAM makers like Infineon Technologies and Nanya Technology have also expressed interest in flash production, iSuppli said.
For DRAM, 0.11-micron-and-smaller processes will account for 10% of wafer starts in 2003. Meanwhile, DDR400 is expected to reach 38% of total DDR shipments in the fourth quarter, which will lead to a mix of DDR products in the market, the comnpany said.
