United Microelectronics Corp. is reportedly running its 8-inch 0.13-micron lines at full capacity, prompting it to activate lines at its 300mm plant in Tainan, Taiwan, according to a report.
A spokeswoman for UMC confirmed the company is in production on 300mm wafers, but could not give specific details about production at the Tainan plant.
The 300mm plant has the capacity for 3,000 wafers a month at 0.13-micron, according to the source. However, more testing and qualifying procedures need to be taken place in 3 to 6 months before going into full production, the report said.
0.13-micron production accounted for 6 percent of UMC’s revenue in Q4 2002, and the company plans to double that amount this year.
UMC has no plans to buy additional equipment beyond what has already been planned for the year, the report said.
