PC sales hurted by war in Iraq

Monday, April 7, 2003
The US-Iraq war started two weeks ago has affected the PC market as much as twenty percentage drop from sales, according to Taiwan hardware manufacturers. The export also reflected the same agony specially in the Middle East region. say officials of government agencies and trade organizations.

Already the demand for consumer electronic products in Dubai has slipped, according to the China External Trade Development Council (CETRA). Officials predict the worse case scenario would be a five to ten percent decline in local sales, which would significantly hurt Taiwan exports to the region.

Dubai, a part of the United Arab Emirates, is a key barometer for market conditions in the Middle East. The metropolis is a major transshipment center for electronic and other types of manufactured products, says CETRA. "The recovery from the current shakeout is taking place at a slower pace than expected. A U.S.-led war on Iraq would raise fears for more acts of terrorism and therefore slow down the recovery even further," Board of Foreign Trade (BOFT) officials said.

Top local PC makers such as Acer, Elitegroup Computer Systems, Asustek, Quanta Computer Inc, said they have drop in orders. Their rivals such as Dell, IBM, HP and many international brands also reported decrease in demand globally.
