According to US-based tech research firm, Gartner Inc., after many Taiwanese companies have relocated their facilities in China, is driving the whole semiconductor industry in China to its peak that brings growth throughout Asia region.
In the latest report made by Gartner, the Asia Pacific semiconductor market was worth US$57.3 billion in 2002 and it is expect to reach US$64.9 billion this year, up by 13.2 percent. The growth will continue for next four years with estimate 12 percent each year to reach almost US$104 billion by 2007.
China/Hong Kong and South Korea will continue to lead the region, while Taiwan’s electronic equipment manufacturers shifting their high-volume, low-end production to China. China still lagging behind Taiwan in equipment and technology know-how, but China offering low cost labor and availability of raw materials will stimulate continuous shifting of electronic equipment production to China by global equipment manufacturers.
China is working hard to acquire technology know-how through cooperation with international firms and the Chinese government offering tax cut to these firms. Seeing the door of opportunity, Taiwanese firms like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has given approval by Taiwanese government to setup only 8-inch wafer foundry with 0.25-micron process technology in China. The Taiwanese company must have 12-inch wafer foundry back in Taiwan, running at production volume.
Other Taiwanese semiconductor companies will soon follow the footsteps of TSMC and it will increase the supply to huge China' semiconductor industry. In related to semiconductor news, the Investment Commission reported that China-bound investment grew by 39 percent last year alone to top US$3.86 billion compared to 2001.
