Microsoft Corp. announced Wednesday (April 9) that it will deliver in the middle of this year beta versions of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 for Advanced Micro Devices' Opteron and Athlon 64 processors.

The new versions of Windows will provide native support for AMD's upcoming 64-bit CPUs in servers, desktops and notebooks.

Just last month a senior Microsoft server manager said the company had no plan to release a schedule for supporting the AMD 64-bit processors at either the launch of the Opteron CPUs or Windows Server 2003. Those events come back-to-back the week of April 21.

In its latest announcement, Microsoft said it "delivered to industry partners a developmental release of the 64-bit operating system with application development tools for the AMD 64-bit processor hardware" in the fourth quarter of 2002.

"Native 64-bit Windows on AMD provides customers a high-performance 32-bit application platform together with an easy migration path to the power of 64-bit computing," said Dirk Meyer, senior vice president of AMD's Computation Products Group, in a prepared statement.
