Japanese DRAM maker Elpida Memory said it may increase its manufacturing output to 15,000 300-mm diameter wafer starts per month by the end of 2003, from current levels of 3000 to 4000 wafer starts per month.
The report quotes unidentified sources saying that Elpida's 2003 capital expenditure plan, which stands, at about $750 million for the year, should be enough to finance the capacity expansion, but that the company needs to raise money to execute on that plan.
The report said that Elpida may need to spend $500 million to $600 million to expand its 300-mm wafer fab and that how successful Elpida is at raising money over the next week or two, would be key.
Recently Elpida opted to expand its output by outsourcing chip manufacture to Taiwan's Powerchip Semiconductor Corp.
