Nvidia Corp. Tuesday introduced a single-chip core-logic device dubbed nForce 3 to support the 32-/64-bit Opteron processor also introduced today by Advanced Micro Devices Inc.
At the same time, Via Technologies Inc. unveiled its K8T400M chipset for the Opteron, AMD's first high-end MPU for the server/wokstation market.
The Nvidia nForce 3 is aimed at the professional workstation market and provides Nvidia Quadro graphics capability for 64-bit computing. Nvidia, Santa Clara, Calif., said it has teamed with Taiwan's ASUSTek Computer Inc. to put nForce 3 on motherboards. Some 16 workstation vendors are expected to offer the nForce 3 solution, according to Nvidia.
The core logic IC is made possible using a single chip because the AMD Opteron embeds the memory controller on the processor die, counter to more conventional methods in which the controller is housed in a separate portion of the core logic known as the north bridge.
Separately, VIA unveiled its K8T400M chipset to support the Opteron for both servers and workstations. The Via chipset is built around the high-speed HyperTransport link to the Opteron processor. It connects to the Via VT8237 south bridge through an Ultra V-link connection that is said to offer a 1Gbyte/s bandwidth. The chipset also includes a dual-channel serial-ATA RAID controller and dual-channel parallel ATA-133 for backward compatibility.
