Celestica closing Dublin manufacturing

Friday, May 2, 2003 Canadian EMS provider Celestica Inc. has announced plans to shut its PCB manufacturing facility in Dublin with the loss of 250 jobs. A further 70 contract workers will also lose their jobs.

The cuts come as part of a wider restructuring plan announced in January to cut 2,000 jobs worldwide, on top of the 6,000 announced last July.

The company blamed the continued downturn in the telecoms sector as the reason for the plant's closure, which made PCBs for mobile phones and networking devices. The company said it plans to move production to other facilities overseas.

The site was purchased from Motorola in December 2000 in a $70 million deal, that included the loss of 750 positions at the plant. Another 750 workers were again culled 11 months later when the headcount was reduced to 500 and once again in October last year as a further 250 people left the facility.

"Today is traumatic for the workforce and for their families but we must not allow our disappointment to deflect us from the urgent task of replacing as quickly as possible the jobs that have been lost," said Mary Harney, Tanaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment.

"The telecommunications business around the world has been going through a tough time lately and the closure of Celestica is yet another symptom," Harney said.
