The Chinese government is soliciting companies here for technologies and products that could be used by Beijing to combat the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).
A science and technology official at the Chinese embassy here said Thursday (May 1) it is working directly with the “National SARS Task Force of China” to locate technologies and products that could be used to treat, prevent or control the spread of SARS.
The unusual request underscores the severity of the SARS outbreak in China. Earlier this week, the acting mayor of Beijing made a rare live TV appearance to discuss plans for battling the SARS outbreak. During the appearance, he acknowledged widespread panic in Beijing.
