Advanced Micro Devices announced its Athlon MP processor 2800+, an upgraded version of its Athlon 2600 designed for one-way and two-way servers and workstations running 32-bit applications for enterprises.
The 2800 is based on a new core that features more L2 cache than previous AMD Athlon MP processors, AMD claimed, withholding specifics. AMD, known for downplaying Intel Corp.'s "speeds and feeds" approach, also withheld the x86 processor's clock speed.
The processor is said to be compatible with AMD's stable Socket A infrastructure and supports DDR memory. It is manufactured using AMD's 0.13 micron copper processor technology in Fab 30 in Dresden, Germany.
Systems featuring the 2800 are expected to be available immediately. The technology is priced at $275 in 1,000-unit quantities.
