Motorola's China facilities under close watch for SARs outbreak

Friday, May 9, 2003 Motorola Inc. is keeping a particular close watch on the SARS epidemic, juggling the operation of offices and fabs in the asian region.

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday issued an advisory recommending travelers consider postponing all but essential travel to Taipei, Taiwan, the inner Mongolia provinces of China, and Tianjin, China, where Motorola Semiconductor Products Sector (SPS) operates a manufacturing and back end assembly facility.

Motorola had recently restricted its China headquarters in Beijing after an employee was hospitalized with severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) symptoms. That employee is responding to treatment, according to the company. Motorola plans to reopen the Beijing facility on Monday.

"We've been watching all along and will continue to keep a close eye," the spokeswoman said. "We have pretty tight travel restrictions within the company right now on all the affected areas. For SPS, we've asked our travelers notify our occupational health resources people before they leave to travel to any affected area, and after they come back."

The SPS spokeswoman said there have been no reports of SARS at the Tianjin plant, but like virtually all semiconductor fabrication facilities, Motorola maintains health personnel on site.

"We've asked if any employee does have any symptoms to come and get checked out," she said. "We're maintaining a heavy flow of communications with employees because they appreciate it and because there is a level of fear."
