AMD said that an enhanced version of its Athlon XP processor, 3200+, is available for $464 in 1,000 unit quantities. The suffix of the Athlon XP 3200+ part number is said to indicate a level of performance without being strictly related to clock frequency.
AMD did not say at what clock frequencies the Athlon XP 3200 operates. But another processor from AMD that was recently launched, Athlon MP 2800+, has a maximum clock frequency of 2.133-GHz.
A press report said the Athlon XP 3200+ operates at a 2.2-GHz clock frequency. Leading processors from Intel, AMD's main rival, operate at clock frequencies in excess of 3 GHz.
Nor did AMD give the size of the cache memories on its latest processor or how they compare with previous versions of the Athlon XP. The company did say the caches can be either 384-kbytes or 640-kbytes depending on which core the Athlon is based on. The company said all the Athlon XP processors are manufactured using a 0.13-micron process technology.
The company added that the 3200+ version does have enhancements over previous versions that include a “400 faster front-side bus," presumably running at 400-MHz clock frequency.
