Advanced Micro Devices have slashed prices on its mainstream Athlon XP processor to compete head-on with Intel's Celeron.
Over the weekend, Intel cut the prices on select models of its Celeron line. In response, AMD reduced the price of its Athlon XP 2500+ 28% to $89, close to the $84 price of the 2.4GHz Celeron, after Intel cut that processor's price 18%. The AMD Athlon XP 2400+ was cut 18% to $84.
Two other Athlon processors, the XP 2200+ and 2100+, were cut to $74 each, matching Intels new prices for its 2.2GHz and 2.1GHz Celeron MPUs..
AMD also cut the price of its high-performance Athlon XP processors. The 3000+ fell 18% to $265, the 2800+ dipped 20% to $180, and the 2600+ fell 32% to $103.
