Taiwan based Wintron got the orders from IBM to build 12.1-inch ThinkPad X notebooks. Shipments of 30,000 units per month are expected to start at the end of this year or early 2004, according to the sources famaliar with the company.
This is the first time IBM outsource its high-end ThinkPad X notebooks production to a Taiwanese notebook maker although IBM has had many other lower-end notebooks manufactured by Taiwanese companies over the years, the sources said. The ThinkPad X notebooks are currently made by IBM Japan.
Besides Wistron, Quanta Computer also gets orders from IBM to supply the ThinkPad G notebooks, sources said. Taiwanese notebook makers produce about 30-40% of IBM notebooks. IBM’s total annual notebook sales have been staying around 2.8 million units over the past two or three years, sources said.
