DRAM maker ProMOS Technologies denied a newspaper report here that Intel Corp. was preparing to invest in the company and would make an announcement on June 25.
The report was “pure speculation,” a ProMOS spokesman said. “We have regular meetings with Intel, but that is for industry purposes. They discuss what they can do to make the DRAM market more competitive, and not dominated by one player.”
Last week, Japan's Elpida Memory Inc. said Intel would invest $100 million in its operations, which include a new 300mm wafer facility that the company wants to ramp at a faster pace if it can find investors. In addition to Intel, Elpida's parents -- Hitachi and NEC -- made investments along with a group of undisclosed investors for a total of $687 million.
Elpida recently became a technology partner of ProMOS, which itself is in need of money to expand capacity at its 300mm wafer fab. For nearly a year, ProMOS has been caught in the middle of a feud between its parent companies, Infineon Technologies AG and Mosel Vitelic Inc. The German firm has tried exercising greater control over ProMOS, but has met stiff resistance from Mosel, the largest shareholder.
The ProMOS spokesman said his company would consider investment from Intel, but “our discussions have not touched on that yet.”
