A magnitude 6.5 quake hit offshore of Taiwan on Tuesday, following a 6.3 quake on Monday.
Both quakes had little effect on the island's chip operations, including major foundries Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. and United Microelectronics Corp. They both acknowledged that some wafers are lost in a minor quake, but it's usually a low number.
The quake hit Taiwan in the late afternoon, and originated off the central eastern coast, at a depth of 25 kilometers. In the Hsinchu and Tainan science parks, it registered a 3.0 and 4.0, respectively.
The Monday quake was centered about 25 kilometers off the northeast shore. By the time it reached Taiwan, it only registered 4.0. In Hsinchu it was a 3.0. Chip fabs can handle up to magnitude 6.0 quakes before operations become more severely affected.
