Sun Microsystems Inc. and Intel Corp. have agreed on a deal in which Sun will optimize its Java platform for Intel's Xscale-based silicon aimed at smart phones and other mobile systems.
Hans Geyer, general manager of Intel's Personal Internet Client components group, said the agreement calls for Sun to distribute to its more than 60 licensees an optimized version of its Java virtual machine platform, the Connected Limited Device Configuration HotSpot implementation, which is targeted at handsets, pagers and PDAs.
Sun will tune its software to run on existing Xscale based silicon, as well as future solutions. Intel now ships several integrated devices based on Xscale processor cores running at 200-, 300- and 400-MHz. Geyer said Intel is now sampling faster Xscale cores that Sun also will support.
"This covers today's and future technologies," said Geyer.
Intel now offers a less-optimized version of Java on its products. Java is growing in popularity, particularly on high-end handsets such as Japan's iMode phones, he said.
Geyer declined to predict the performance gains expected from tuning the Sun silicon to the Intel silicon.
