Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. quietly announced that it has signed investment agreements with the Shanghai Songjiang government of China to set up an 8-inch fab there.
The announcement was slipped into a June 8 SEC filing saying that the TSMC fab, using 0.25-micron and 0.35-micron process technologies, will be located in the Songjiang Science Park in Shanghai to provide foundry services in Mainland China.
According to the filing, TSMC still needs approval from Taiwan's government. Electronic News confirmed that TSMC was looking to build the fab in March during SEMICON China. At that time, TSMC could give no estimate for production starts. TSMC now believes that, based on the approval and having enough customer demands, the 8-inch fab will start small volume production by the end of 2004.
