Local sources reported saying Intel Corp, the world's biggest semiconductor maker, may buy a stake in ProMOS Technologies Inc.
"The news is purely speculation," said Albert Lin, spokesperson at ProMOS. "We do meet with Intel once or twice a year, but we have never had any discussions to that effect. The report said Intel may invest US$100 million for two seats on the 11-member board of ProMOS.
But Lin said:"We are the first company to get approval from Intel," ProMOS has recently received Intel's DRAM certification for its DDR400. ProMOS is Taiwan's largest manufacturer of 12-inch DRAM wafers, with total monthly 12-inch wafer production of 9,000 wafers. It expects to increase monthly 12-inch wafer shipments to 13,000 wafers by year-end. Last month, ProMOS has changed its profit forecast to a NT$1.2 billion loss on weaker-than-expected prices for this year.
