Taiwan to build new exhibition center

The Council for Economic Planning and Development (CEPD) has approved the NT$3.8 billion plan to build a second world trade center and exhibition hall in the Nankang district of Taipei city starting next year.
 
Taipei World Trade Center (TWTC) located in the Xinyi district of downtown Taipei, which hosted many local and international trade shows more than a decade now as the number of visitors, exhibitors increasing yearly, the space in TWTC is getting smaller each year. Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) started drafting a plan way back in 1994 and selected Nankang in eastern Taipei as the proposed site.
 
The draft drew a lot of controversial especially on the project site and the budget plan. Some locations suggested during the course of the year, were Hsinchu, where the heart of Taiwan's IT industry or Tao Yuan, where it is closer to international airport and offer larger land area. While the budget plan drew heated debate among the legislators because building a trade center cost government substantial amount of money.
 
Later, BOT model was proposed in cooperation with the private investors to save government expenditure. Economics Minister Lin Yi Fu received the project report and later sent to vice premier Lin Hsin I to handle the project. The construction of new exhibition site will begin in March of 2004 and expecting to complete in October of 2005.
 
The new exhibition hall, which will cover six hectares and accommodate 2,800 display booths. Economics Minister Lin said the MOEA has allocated a budget of NT$100 million for the project this year. It will set aside additional fund of NT$2 billion for 2004 and NT$1.7 billion for 2005. Who will run the new trade center will be decided later by MOEA whether by itself or consigning the job to others. Presently, CETRA is assigned to administer the TWTC, Xinyi district.
