Silicon Integrated Systems Inc.'s Xabre Graphics Inc. (XGI) subsidiary Thursday agreed to acquire the graphics operations of Trident Microsystems.
XGI will merge Trident's graphics technology for mainstream to low-end notebook PCs with its own desktop and high-end product line to form a stronger broader-based graphics operation, the company said.
Details of the transaction were not disclosed, although the deal is expected to be completed by the end of June. Le Nguyen, vice president of marketing for Trident, said the company will hold a 30% stake in XGI after the deal is finalized. Nguyen said an additional unidentified investor is also involved in the merger.
Nguyen will head marketing for the U.S. operations of XGI, based in Sunnyvale, Calif.
The remaining multimedia operations of Trident Microsystems not acquired by XGI will be combined with the company's Taiwan subsidiary to create Trident Technologies Inc., which will focus on digital TV and HDTV electronics. The restructured Trident will be headquartered in Taipei.
