Elpida debuts new chip for handheld application

Monday, June 16, 2003

Elpida Memory announcing the availability of its 256Mbit SDRAM targeting at digital cameras and handhelds application

The single-die memory offers a 50 percent reduction in board space and a 65 percent power savings over multi-chip package designs that use two 128Mbit x16 FBGA-packaged devices, according to Jun Kitano, director of technical marketing for Elpida Memory USA.

“Elpida strives to provide its customers in the mobile applications space with single-chip solutions that save board space and minimize power consumption without sacrificing overall product performance,” said Kitano, pointing out that the company's existing 128Mbit SDRAM is gaining customer acceptance. “256 is the next step our major customers were asking for. This product utilizes the same FPGA package with the same pin-out as our current 128Mbit SDRAM, so users can easily upgrade the memory density.”

"For 2002, almost 5 percent of our business is for the consumer market. The majority is PC/server market," Kitano said. "We are planning in the year 2005 to achieve almost 20 percent with the consumer market."

Elpida’s 256Mbit x32 monolithic SDRAM devices operate at up to 166MHz and are manufactured on 0.11-micron technology. The technology is packaged in JEDEC-standard 90-ball FBGA packages and provides low-power consumption of VDD 3.3 V/2.5 V for battery-powered handheld products, Elpida said.

Samples of the memory are available now starting at $20. Volume production is slated for September.
