Samsung is a major producer of Rambus RDRAM chips for use in the Sony Corp. PlayStation II electronic game console. Some industry analysts believe Samsung is aiming to develop a new memory chip using the Yellowstone interface for the next generation Sony game console.

Sony itself has licensed Yellowstone from Rambus. Toshiba Corp. and Elpida memory Inc. are also Yellowstone licensees.

The new Rambus DRAM architecture is expected to achieve data rates of 3.2GHz to 6.4GHz and beyond, enabling system memory bandwidth up to 100Gbytes/s.

Yellowstone uses a Rambus circuit technology called FlexPhase that allows precise on-chip alignment of data with clock frequency. This eliminates the need of printed circuit board trace length matching to bring data into line with clock cycles. Rambus said this avoids added latency and a 20% bandwidth penalty associated with 8-to-10-bit encoding used in present DRAM circuits.
