Advanced Micro Devices Inc. Monday expanded its Opteron 64-bit server line to include for the first time processors for four-to-eight way servers, as well as a low-end uniprocessor family for workstations and one-way servers.
This marks AMD's first move into the four-to-eight ways server market.
Three new versions of the processors include models 840, 842 and 844, based on different performance levels. All are available immediately.
In quantities of 1,000 units, the 840 is priced at $749, the 842 at $1299 and the 844 at $2149.
Server builders, including APRO, Aspen Systems Inc., and RackSaver Inc., have introduced systems available now in the North American market, according to AMD, Sunnyvale, Calif.
Three versions of the low-end uniprocessor Opteron include the model 140 at $229, model 142 at $438, and model 144 at $669, all in quantities of 1,000 units.
AMD unveiled its first Opteron 200 series processors, a two-way version, in April.
