LSI Logic has begun shipping an integrated ADSL, Voice-over-IP and Ethernet gateway reference design chip set dubbed the HomeBASE, that incorporates its modem chip, the open architecture ZSP digital signal processor, a network processor and Ethernet PHY.
The company said the VoIP/ADSL Gateway provides OEMs the fastest and most cost-effective solution to design a wide range of voice-enabled broadband devices. Along with hardware, the reference design includes software such as router, network address translation and firewall based on the Linux operating system.
The design comes with a VoIP software suite with multiple voice codecs including G.711, G.723.1, G.726, G.728 and G.729 and supporting signaling protocols such as SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) and MGCP (Media Gateway Control Protocol).
"By overlaying voice on a broadband access network using DSL as the transport, these new devices enable Internet service providers to offer consumers low-cost, multi-port voice services in addition to data services over a single copper wire connection," said Stephen Ellwood, marketing director of the DSL Product Business Unit, LSI Logic.
LSI said the VoIP design offers full interoperability with industry-leading DSLAMs. Tbe part incorporates the SpeedReach transport technology and a network processor so that designs exceed the rate/reach performance laid down by the TR-048 specifications, enabling telecommunication companies to expand their DSL coverage area.
The chip set is fully compliant and interoperable with industry standards T1.413, G.992.1 (G.dmt), and G.992.2 (G.lite) and supports Annex A and Annex B. The scalable architecture of the LSI Logic ZSP DSP gives manufacturers the flexibility to easily expand the number of voice channels supported by the gateway.
