NEC announced 10G Ethernet module

Monday, July 14, 2003

NEC announced the release of a 10 Gigabit Ethernet module that could allow network technicians to provide a single 10G bit/sec link between two boxes, instead of tying together multiple Gigabit lines with link aggregation technologies. The card could also allow an enterprise to run 10 times the bandwidth over a single strand of fiber over a metro area network.

The module will support IPv6 and IPv4 routing, as well as Layer 2 and Layer 3 QoS features, in hardware. The 10 Gigabit blade will also support Link aggregation, allowing multiple ports to be combined into 20G bit/sec to 40G bit/sec bi-directional links.

NEC introduced the BlueFire switch line in the U.S. in 2001. Before 2001, BlueFire was sold for four years in Asia, where it is used by service providers and enterprises.

The BlueFire 10 Gigabit Ethernet card is available now for $70,000.
