Fab construction spending will hit $1.2 billion by Q3 2004, according to a study by SMA. The strategic marketing firm said fab construction spending peaked at $1.7 billion in Q4 2000 and then dropped to $500 million from there. And now the spending is expected to increase.
SMA also indicates that overall expenditures will increase fueled by spending on new 300mm fabs. Spending for these new fabs will grow from $2.4 billion this year to more than $5 billion by Q3 2004, according to SMA.
The report said that roughly half the spending will take place in Asia Pacific. Although Europe, Japan and the U.S. will continue to outspend Asia Pacific for leading-edge 300mm equipment, but the gap is becoming narrower, according to the report.
