Chartered Semi forecast a robust 3rd quarter

Friday, July 18, 2003

Chartered Semiconductor forecasts its 2003 revenue will double as demand rises and margin improves. The Singapore foundry, competing with the more prominent Taiwan-based rivals, said its net loss and revenue was relatively unchanged at $90 million and $127.6 million respectively in the three months ended June 30.

Including its stake in Silicon Manufacturing Partners, a minority owned joint venture, Chartered's second quarter revenue rose 23%, to $163.1 million from $142 million in the immediately preceding quarter.

The increase came from rising demand from the communications and consumer sectors, offset by less than robust sales into the computer market.

Chartered said its wafer shipments rose 18% in the second quarter, to 140,100 8-inch equivalent wafers from 118,600 8-inch equivalent wafers in the year-ago quarter.

The company said its capacity utilization rose to 55% in the second quarter, an improvement upon the 42% recorded in the comparable 2002 period and 45% in the first quarter of this year.
