IDC said Asian PC market up 12% in quarter

Wednesday, July 23, 2003
IDC's preliminary reports show that the Asia/Pacific PC market totaled 6.5 million units in the second quarter of 2003. The figure is up by 2% from the first quarter and 12% higher than the same period one year ago.

The second quarter grew at the highest rate since 2000, exceeding analysts' and the industry's expectations although the quarter got off to a rough start due to the SARS impact on retail sales in markets like Hong Kong, Singapore, and the PRC. Bryan Ma, Personal Systems Senior Research Manager, IDC Asia/Pacific said that SARS did not scar the Asian PC market as deeply as it could have during the quarter and great relief after SARS subsided, the global market will see more significant recovery in the second half of the year.

IDC expects the second half of 2003 to be slightly softer than initially anticipated. But there was a fear that SARS will attack in the winter months, although IDC believes that the impact on the PC market will be less severe than in 2Q as governments and consumers have already experienced the effects of the virus spread. The global economic still in the roller coaster ride, there is no sign of clear recovery.
