Sun Microsystems and Silicon Graphics Inc. said at a conference Monday that they will work together to develop standard software bindings linking Java to the OpenGL graphics applications programming interface.
A variety of open-source bindings exist but no standardization yet. "Today it's a fragmented environment of different open-source solutions out there, but this will be an industry-blessed solution," said Jerry Evans a distinguished graphics engineer at Sun.
The standard bindings are expected to be available free and ultimately will be incorporated with OpenGL product implementations. The standard is an underlying technology enabler for bringing to the Java environment a host of OpenGL ES products aimed at mobile systems.
