IBM launched its Opteron-based eServer 325 and said it will deliver 1,058 copies of such machine to Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology for use on biology and materials sciences researches.
Each of the 1,058 eServer 325 systems will be fitted with two AMD Opteron 246, 2GH processors. The server is claimed to be one of the world top high performing systems.
IBM is the first big-name server vendor to build an Opteron server. The company has said it chose to use Opteron because certain customers wanted access to the chip that runs on both 64-bit and 32-bit software.
The eServer 325 starts at $2,919, IBM said.
