A flaw has spotted in wireless LAN technology in which one slow connection by a user could degrade the performance of others connecting to the same hot spot, a group of French researchers said.
The research was using the IEEE 802.1x standard as study point, including 802.11a and the widely used Wi-Fi 802.11g protocol, 802.11b. For instance, the scientists said, users closer to the hot spot with a fast 11Mbps connection would see their performance drop to 1Mbps when a single user access the hot spot with a much slower 1Mbps connection.
The slower connection could probably be when a user is further away from the hot spot or when a user is downloading files, or accessing audio or video, the group said.
The symptom, they said, is inherent in the CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Avoidance Collision) access protocol, which guarantees equal access to the hot spot by all devices.
