AMD shipping new 2 Ghz CPU

Tuesday, August 5, 2003 Advanced Micro Devices said that the Opteron 246 model processor is available at a price of $794 in 1,000-unit quantities.

The chip, manufactured in a 0.13-micron CMOS process, can operate at a clock frequency of 2-GHz compared to 1.8-GHz for the available Opteron 244. Apart from maximum attested clock frequency there appear to be no other differences between Series 200 Opteron processors, which suggests that the Opteron 200 series of processors is one design marketed as multiple products.

The Opteron also comes in 100 series and 800 series and all can process 64-bit data and are intended for server and workstation style computers.

The Opteron 246 joins a list of other Opteron parts including the Opteron 240, the 242, and the 244. The initial number indicates support for using two processors in a multiprocessing configurartion, the second two are indicative of performance.
