Samsung Electronics announced today that it has been licensed by Sony for the first time to sell the Memory Stick NAND flash unit under the Samsung brand.
Under an earlier 2001 agreement, Sony licensed Samsung to make Memory Stick units to be used internally in Samsung's own consumer electronic products. That pact has now been expanded to allow Samsung to sell the Memory Stick on the open market, a spokeswoman said.
Shipments of the Samsung brand Memory Stick will begin this quarter.
Samsung makes other flash memory cards as well, but sells only to OEMs who have outsourced production to the company. This includes Compact Flash, MultiMedia Card, and Secure Digital cards.
