Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. widened its lead in the DRAM market during the second quarter, gaining 1.1 percent in revenue share to 31 percent revenue, according to a Gartner Dataquest alert issued Wednesday (Aug. 13).
Hynix Semiconductor Inc., ranked four, also increased sales but not enough to overtake Infineon Technologies AG, ranked third, or second-ranked Micron Technology Inc.
The total DRAM market was slightly down in the second quarter at $3.723 billion compared with $3.743 billion in the first quarter of 2003, Gartner said.
While Samsung's quarterly DRAM sales moving from $1.12 billion to $1.155 billion, sales values slipped back at Micron Technology Inc. and Infineon Technologies AG.
Hynix increased sales markedly from $476 million in the first quarter to $510 million, allowing the troubled South Korean manufacturer to increase its market share from 12.7 percent in the first quarter to 13.7 percent in the second quarter. Despite the strong results, Infineon remains in third place with its best ever market share of 15.4 percent, according to the Gartners statistics.
Infineon's publicly reported financial results from its memory business unit include DRAM licensing revenue from its technology partners, embedded DRAM revenue and, since the start of 2003, flash revenue, which Gartner Dataquest excludes.
The next few quarters will be critical for Hynix owing to countervailing duties being imposed on exports to the U.S. and Europe, Gartner Dataquest wanrned. The tariffs have been confirmed at 44.29 percent in the U.S. and at 34.8 percent in the European Union, and Hynix is being forced to redistribute sales toward China, India and Eastern Europe.
