Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, San Jose, has outsouced and signed a deal with Great Wall Technology Ltd., a high-technology enterprise group based in Shenzhen, China, to manufacture and sell the hard disk drive.
ExcelStor, Great Wall's subsidiary, will manufacture 40- and 80-gigabyte versions of Hitachi's recently introduced 3.5-in. Deskstar 7K250 desktop hard drive.
ExcelStor will manufacture and market drives under its own brand using a license from Hitachi. On top of that, Hitachi will also sell its Deskstar 7K250 drives, manufactured by ExcelStor, under the Hitachi brand worldwide.
"This is a significant milestone for Hitachi in China and highlights our ongoing commitment to the China market," said Jun Naruse, chief executive of Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, in a statement. "This relationship is a win-win for all involved, as it allows us to expand our product offerings to Chinese customers, capture opportunities in China's growing IT market and boost the local economy."
