Utilization rate of the worldwide foundries rose above 85 percent in the second quarter reaching the sector's historical average as it recovers from its worst-ever slump, said a survey.
In the three months to June, 85.9 percent of the capacity of chip factories was used, up from 82.8 percent in the first quarter, a global semiconductor industry association said.
Capacity for all integrated circuits rose to 1.31 million silicon wafer starts per week from 1.25 million in the first quarter. Actual wafer starts, which reflect demand for chips, amounted to 1.12 million from 1.03 million in the first quarter.
The chip sector is showing signs of recovering from the worst recession in its 50-year history amid positive reports of accelerating chips sales and modest investments in new fab.
